Artists I'm Watching in 2013!

There are a few artists that I have been keeping my eye on for the last few years. Their music is explosive and unique, but they have not been able to make a huge impact with the American audience. I have a feeling that will all change in 2013 as some are releasing long-awaited debut albums and follow ups to impressive, previous efforts. You may not be familiar with their names now, but soon you will. Shall we?

Simon Curtis:

The sexy Oklahoma native began work on his musical career with the release of his debut EP, Alter Boy, at the young age of 20. After appearing on the Nickelodeon musical, Spectacular!, Curtis released his official debut album, 8Bit Heart, for free on his website. The album was downloaded more than 150,000 times within two weeks of its release, putting it on the same track as the sales numbers of many big-name artists at the time. 8Bit Heart was well received by pop fans including its standout tracks such as “Diablo” and “Beat Drop” which sampled Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”.
Two years later, the artist released his sophomore effort, RA, preceded by two singles, “Superhero” and “Flesh”, an overly sexual jam of how Curtis likes to perform in bed. Other tracks such as “Soul 4 Sale” and “Enemy” showcased his talents of crafting pop songs with addictive hooks and choruses. The album debuted at number 20 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart with no promotion and no supporting label. Curtis is planning his third album with recent performances of two new songs titled “Heart In 2” and “Diamonds on the Dancefloor”. The new project currently has an expected 2013 release date. Expect impressive vocals and catchy songwriting that will take you back to the 90s Spears/NSync era.

Frankmusik:

The 27-year-old UK electropop artist gained attention with the 2009 release of his debut album Complete Me, which featured the singles “3 Little Words” and “Better Off as Two”. He continued to work on remixes for artists such as Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse and Pet Shop Boys. In early 2010 it was announced that the artist had signed with Cherrytree Records for the U.S. release of his second studio album.
Do It in the AM contained more of a mainstream, American pop flare to it and featured collaborations with labelmates Far East Movement, Colette Carr and Natalia Kills. The album’s highlights, the Natalia Kills’ duet “No Champagne” and “Wrecking Ball”, were evidence that the artist had potential for a pop radio takeover, but the album unfortunately did not catch on with an audience and went by unnoticed. Between 2011 and 2012, the artist decided on a name change, Vincent Did It, when he released “Dynamo”, and then quickly went back to his original stage name to release “Fast As I Can”, the 2012 lead single off his upcoming third studio album. After departing from his previous record labels, the new album is planned to be released independently. The challenge is now to simplify the structure of his songwriting while still taking risks in terms of production.

Natalia Kills:

British singer-songwriter Natalia Kills caught the eye of blogger Perez Hilton in 2007 with some demos featured on her extended play Wommanequin on the once-popular social website MySpace and quickly became one of the most popular unsigned artists. A few years later, Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am signed the 26-year-old to his label after having to fly to London to convince the artist who had reservations about the music industry.
The pairing led to the release of Kills’ debut album, Perfectionist, in 2011 which featured the will.i.am-assisted lead U.S. single “Free” and “Kill My Boyfriend”. Traces of Alanis Morissette can be found in tracks such as “Broke” and “Break You Hard”, while “Wonderland” and “Mirrors” are other songs that deserve a listen or two. All of the album’s singles failed to garner attention and did not chart. After the release of the album, Kills supported artists such as Kelis, Robyn, Ke$ha, Katy Perry and the Black Eyed Peas on their respective tours and appeared on “Lights Out”, a collaboration with Junior Caldera and Far East Movement, in 2012. For 2013 the artist is readying the release of her second album, Trouble, through Cherrytree and Interscope Records with the release of the first promo single and video “Controversy”.

Eva Simons:

Once a former member of Dutch girl group Raffish, Eva Simons is making a mark for herself in the U.S. dance scene and readying the release of her upcoming debut album, Eva-Lution. Simons gained popularity on the Internet in 2009 for a track entitled “Silly Boy”, which was rumored to be an epic collaboration between R&B singer Rihanna and Lady Gaga. The song received over 20 million views and led to the artist’s eventual signing with EMI. The artist was then featured on the worldwide dance smash “Take Over Control” by Afrojack which went gold in the U.S. and stayed on the charts for six weeks.
Simons has since released the first single off her debut album. “I Don’t Like You”, produced by Zedd, hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in 2012 and led many critics to label the artist as the next big thing in the dance genre. The album’s second single “Renegade” has also been released, but has made no impact so far. With the album’s tentative release date for sometime in 2013, the singer has been killing time by being featured on will.i.am’s UK number one hit “This Is Love” and working with other artists including Chris Brown and LMFAO.

Porcelain Black:

Recently labeled as a gay icon by The Advocate for her rebellious attitude and style, pop singer Porcelain Black is working on her debut album set for a spring 2013 release date under RedOne’s 2101 Records after trying desperately to end her contract with Virgin Records for three years due to disagreements on what music she should record. Described as a mix between Britney Spears and Marilyn Manson, the upcoming album, Mannequin Factory, was originally supposed to see a summer 2011 release but was pushed back due to the disappointing commercial performance of its first two singles, “This is What Rock N Roll Looks Like” featuring Lil Wayne and “Naughty Naughty”.
Black has since made her television performance debut on the Late Show with David Letterman, accompanied Lil Wayne on the second half of his I Am Music Tour, filmed a cameo appearance for the musical Rock of Ages, and helped compose a track for One Direction’s debut album. The album is close to a release thanks to an online protest by Black’s devoted fans. The protest led producer RedOne to release “Swallow My Bullet”, a song dependent on a hook, but carries the artist’s signature rock appeal and metal scream.

BAKER:

The good-looking New York native turned California boy made a splash at SXSW in Austin with a couple of performances last year, released a unique EP and is currently working hard to create “the catchiest, most danceable pop album ever”. BAKER, spelled in all capital letters for a reason, has released covers of iconic tracks such as Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” and Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me”, as well as his own great creations including “Convince Me” and “Echo”, which all feature his seductive vocals that will flirt with you long after the first listen and catchy, upbeat production.
The artist is trying to be the answer to the question many of us in the LGBT community are asking right now: who will be the most powerful male pop star of the 21st century? BAKER definitely has the talent to achieve the title. Since first discovering the artist, BAKER has been featured on Electroqueer, MTV Buzzworthy and Billboard, who recently premiered his latest single and music video, “If U Luv Me”,  a solid track that carries and radio-friendly vibe and does not deviate too much from its numerous predecessors. If his music does not interest you, BAKER’s fashionable sense of style and jaw-dropping good looks certainly will.
